Donovan’s Grand Slam win holds Cardinals over Padres 5-4

SAN DIEGO (AFP) – Lars Knottbar gave St. Louis’ first round in four games with Homer’s solo, then gave rookie Brendan Donovan to the NL Central captains an even bigger boost.

Donovan claimed his first career Grand Slam title in the seventh inning to lead Albert Pujols and the Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Thursday, after three straight games of defeats.

Pujols were among the first to receive Donovan into the dugout.

It was one of the biggest flips I’ve had this year, so that’s been pretty cool for me,” Donovan said.
